Courtesy is having respect for others. It is also knowing how to act properly when other people are around. Being courteous is a mark of a person who is disciplined, respectful and mature. A person should learn how to be courteous as early as possible since this is one of the most important values that one must acquire so as to have a respectful life.
There are many ways we can practice being courteous. In our own house, we should be courteous to our parents. By saying "po" or "opo" to them and doing what they ask us to do, we are already showing courtesy. Also by respecting our sisters and brothers, by not fighting with them, is courtesy. At school, of course, we should be courteous to our teachers by saying "sir" or maybe by greeting them "good morning", whenever we meet them. In public, courtesy is very important. Whenever we meet somebody we know, we should say "hi" or maybe shake his hand instead of snubbing him. This becomes even more important when we deal with the elders. We must learn and know how to act and talk whenever they are around basically because they are older.
Another place where we can try to be courteous is on the road. We should not be easily angered by drivers who "unknowingly" do something such as not signaling when switching lanes or making a turn. This is one of the problems that we Filipinos have. And I think we should be the next breed of drivers to change this attitude.
Lastly, having courtesy to God is very important. By obeying his commandments and fulfilling what he expects of us as a student is being courteous. By kneeling when passing in front of the tabernacle is being courteous. These are just some of the many ways by which we can practice the virtue of courtesy. In conclusion, having courtesy as part of our daily lives will help us grow into mature, respectful and disciplined gentlemen of tomorrow.
MOTTO: Courtesy is a gentleman's policy.
