We are all children of God. And as children, we should live according to our Christian values. It is important to be kind because kindness makes us one with Jesus. Jesus lived a life of perfect kindness. He was kind to all people. He was kind to animals and nature. He was helpful and generous. We too should try to imitate Him. I remember when I was in kindergarten, I had a classmate who was having a hard time understanding the instructions on our test paper. I went to him and explained how we should do it. When my mother learned about it, she asked my teacher if she was aware of it. My teacher told my mom that it was a good deed to help my classmate. Now that I am bigger, it does not mean that I cannot do the same anymore. I can still help my classmates in some other things.
To love and serve God, we must live the virtue of kindness. We serve God by being kind to others because we not only receive grace from Him but we also bring others closer to Him. When my Lola was sick, my family would pick her up from her house on Sundays to take her to Mass with us. When she got worse, my mother would read her the Gospel and meditate with her. My Lola was not a churchgoer when she became old and frail. But she became closer to God before she passed away. Kindness makes others see God in you if you try to see Jesus in people, poor or rich, good or bad, beautiful or ugly.
There are many ways we can live the virtue of kindness. A kind word, a smile, a thank you, a pat on the back, a courteous greeting, a helping hand, a visit to the sick and the old: all this is kindness. As students, we can brighten the days of our school janitors by greeting them with a smile and helping them maintain cleanliness around campus. We can be considerate with our teachers by being attentive in class; that way, they will have peace in the classroom and they will not have to grow old fast. When given the opportunity like doing corporal works of mercy in school, we can bring food, school supplies or toys and share our time and talents with our less fortunate brothers. We can help at home by putting our dirty clothes in the hamper so our helpers would not have to be so tired picking them up. Our moms would be happy if we put our school stuff in their right places. All these and more are just few examples of what we can do to live kindness.
Let us all be kind to others and to ourselves.
