11/24/2009 - DIRECTOR MICHAEL WILLIAMS VISITS SOUTHRIDGE
By Institutional Information Office
Mr. Michael Williams, Actor and Director, recently visited PAREF Southridge School to give a talk regarding Theatre to the Grade 5 Students. The boys were very excited to hear about him coming over since they had just seen an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, a play directed by Williams himself for his company, Theatre Down South.
Before meeting the Grade 5 boys, Williams had a little get together with the Plautus participants. This visit was very timely for these high school students since they are eagerly preparing for their Plautus Plays, their entries in the annual play fest held amongst the Southridge high school students. He gave them a brief background of his life's works, from those he did abroad to his local projects, both past and current. Afterwards, the boys had some inquiries regarding theater activities, and asked for tips on how to make their plays work and posed some questions they felt were pertinent to help improve as directors, actors, and writers. He gladly answered them all and was very happy to see that these Southridge students were embracing theater as a form of art and as a medium of communication.
Then came the assembly of the eager Grade 5 students, who brought with them their copies of Robert Louis Stevenson's magnum opus, where they listened intently to what Mr. Williams had to say. Very simply Williams spoke to them of his experiences, about Treasure Island and his love for theater. Right after, an open forum was held, where the students were given a few minutes to ask him questions regarding the play, his works and some other questions that were surprisingly mature coming from Grade 5 students. Immediately after that, he obliged them by signing their copies of Treasure Island, leaving the students with smiles on their faces as he left the school.
