2/20/2008 -SOUTHRIDGE AFTERNOON SCHOOL GRADUATES CONTINUE TO MAKE WAVES
By James de los Santos
Many know about the exceptional accomplishments of the students of PAREF Southridge School. What most don't realize is that there is an equally impressive roster of achievements stemming from a usually overlooked Southridge body, the Afternoon School. In fact, from the Afternoon School we have alumni getting recognition as top students of Muntinlupa, top examinees of the licensure examination for teachers and even top students in the whole Philippines. They have clearly shown greatness in different fields, excelling in such diverse fields as science, teaching, medicine, literature and even medical allied courses.
The Southridge Afternoon School is a high school unit initiated in 1987 for deserving students of limited financial means. The students receive the same quality of education and formation that characterize Southridge. The first batch graduated in 1991. From the very beginning, the Afternoon School has been one of the many ways that Southridge is able to help the community. Most of the students graduated with honors from the different public elementary schools in the area. At present, there are 179 students enrolled from First to Fourth Year High School.
Dennis Umali, a graduate of Night School Batch 2001, is a fine example of Night School excellence. He was the topnotcher of the 2007 Veterinary Medicine Licensure Exam. He graduated magna cum laude in the University of the Philippines, Los Banos with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. And in the same year, he achieved one of the most revered awards for graduating students in the Philippines, the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines, also known as the TOSP award. This award is given to students who have achieved excellence not only in their academics but also through out-of-school activities, through organizations and innovative efforts. This award has one of the highest standards of selection and recognizes merit on a national scale.
Similar awards such as the MOST (Most Outstanding Students of Muntinlupa) and the MOCT (Most Outstanding Citizens of Muntinlupa) have also been achieved by Afternoon School graduates. (See Table) Some have also gone on to win recognition in the field of Literature, even winning in the Palanca Literary Awards, the highest and most prestigious competition among the writers in the country.
Year after year, many Afternoon School graduates also reap honors in College graduating Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude or Cum Laude. One look at the long list of achievements of the graduates and you know right away, this is no ordinary school. And so as our way of giving them their much-deserved tribute, we are proud to present here the Night School/Afternoon School Graduates' Roster of Achievements:
